Power plants have been pouring carbon into our atmosphere at alarming rates. They are the largest emitters of fossil fuels in the country, but their carbon pollution remains unchecked–until now. In March, the EPA proposed the first-ever limit to carbon pollution from power plants. If passed, this much-needed standard would cap the emissions levels of all new power plant units and encourage the development of cleaner, more efficient technologies.
“Today we’re taking a common-sense step to reduce pollution in our air, protect the planet for our children, and move us into a new era of American energy,” said EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson. “Right now…the health and economic threats of a changing climate continue to grow. We’re putting in place a standard that relies on the use of clean, American-made technology to tackle a challenge that we can’t leave to our kids and grandkids.”
The climate change education group The Climate Reality Project has been hard at work generating support to turn the proposed standard into a reality. Their “Push button. Save planet.” campaign and video allows you to add your voice to the body of support with one simple step.
